'Impossible' tricks were explained..

My take on this movie was that it was told from the perspective of the Chief Inspector, a self-proclaim cynic, skeptic, and 'amateur conjurer'.

An early scene depicts Eisenheim meeting a 'wizard' who makes a tree disappear (which we witness), leading us to believe that the tricks are described from different people's points of view.

IMHO, the [spoiler] Ghosts / Apparitions ] were shown in the movie as remembered by the theater patrons, hence I didn't dwell on it too much, other than wondering HOW he would have done it.

Anyone else get that impression?

I think the real explanation is simply that the filmmakers wanted the audience to believe that Eisenheim was a great illusionist and they didn't care to use tricks that could be explained in reality. Having said that, while I don't really believe in your explanation, I like it. It would explain a lot of things.
