I don't get part of the plot (spoiler)

So, when they faked Sophie's death, and everyone believed she was dead indeed, why didn't Eisenheim just grieve for a while and then leave for good? What was the whole theater afterward for - to punish Leopold and make him look as a murderer when in fact he didn't murder her???

I don't get it, I don't think Leopold would have 'chased' Eisenheim if he had left - once Sophie was dead, why would he care about him at all? Did I miss something?

First, I don't think the Prince would have left Eisenheim alone. He was faced with living hiding, giving up his career, and hoping the Prince's spies wouldn't tell the Prince, "Hey! That magician is living with a chick who looks just like the Duchess!"

Second, the Prince WAS planning a civil war and the overthrow (and probably murder) of his own father. A lot of people would have died.

By exposing those plans, Eisenheim and Sophie can someday go about their lives.
