questions about his manager??

I feel like I understand the entire movie. The twist was so obvious I was expecting that there was a better twist coming? Like the writer was setting me up for another twist to teach me a lesson for jumping on the obvious twist.
Anyway, I don't understand what the point of the manager character was? Why was he even in the movie? What was the purpose of him withdrawing all his savings in cash? Certainly they didn't need his savings compared to what a Duchess could secretly come up with? And what was the purpose of signing all of his assets over? Was that some kind of a bribe? Did the manager sell him out? And those scenes didnt make the final cut? He was obviously greedy, so if the inspector was going to find inside info, it would be the manager he'd most likely succeed in bribing. But I don't recall any scenes confirming that?
Am I stupid for being the only person on here asking this? And it was right in front of my face? And I just didn't see it?

He had fired his manager prior to buying the new theater. He was leaving, never to return...his final trick. He didn't need the money, so he gave it to the man who stood by him throughout his career as a gift of appreciation.
