Did anybody else was impressed by Rufus Sewell's performance?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Edward Norton (watch Primal Fear, his motion picture debut, just incredible) and Jessica Biel, but I thought that Rufus Sewell, in his portray of Prince Leopold, was simply brilliant.

I wish I could see more of his work, unfortunately, he seems like a really underrated actor...

So, am I the only one?

reply

Yeah Sewel stood out to me too. Great preformance.

Actually, I had visions of Robert Shaw coming to life in this role. Check out "A Man For All Seasons" in which Rbt Shaw plays the king who lapses into shouting tirades at the drop of a hat, so similar to what Rufus did, and I saw the connection. I'm an old movies fan so don't have much else to add here. Just finished viewing "The Illusionist" and it's spellbinding, kept me on the edge of my seat.

Spot-on comparison, lora64!
Shaw had the same reptilian eyes and flash temper as Sewell.
By the way, Sewell would be a natural to play Czar Nicholas, whom he eerily resembles.

I always love Sewell in anything I see him in--same for Norton--same for Giamatti. What a stellar cast. Made watching this an absolute joy.

reply

I'm glad someone else noticed his resemblance to Nicholas II. I came into the movie late and immediately thought that was who Sewell was playing!

reply

I, too, thought he was excellent. I liked the way he'd say a line, then a beat, and add a little phrase. Can't think of an exact quote from the movie, but, Giamatti also does it a few times, like when he's eating lunch and talking to Norton.

Edward Norton is not underrated and did his best work in the nineties and early 2000;s. Since then movies have changed to action blockbusters which he did one or two of but his skill really lies in deep emotional characters like in American History X and Fight Club. He chooses his projects carefully but is very respected by the important people in the industry. I suggest you try some of his older stuff. He was nominated and won many awards. He won an oscar for American History X which is not to be missed. I love Edward Norton and miss his presence from the screen.

I hope the movie landscape changes very soon as I am sick of comic and action movies with little dialogue and first rate acting like we used to get.

Rufus is always a rock solid! One of the best parts of this excellent film, for sure.

he is very underrated.

I absolutely love Rufus Sewell as an actor. He plays the scummy, abusive character so well (The Illusionist, A Knight's Tale) and really gives you someone to hate.

reply

Rufus wasn't that bad, but if you're looking for a villain character played to perfection... Gladiator, Joaquin Phoenix. There's a character that everyone loved to hate - which means that he absolutely nailed it.
