The Illusionist, which is an amazingly deep story has nothing to do with the Prestige which is an action flick with a setting of magicians.
shareWhy do people have to put down popular movies in order to big up less mainstream ones? The Illusionist was good, but the Prestige was better, imo, and it has a higher rating to prove it.
"Oh, Britta's in this?"
Its just one of those occasional coincidences.
shareA higher rating doesn't prove anything other than...it was more popular. Things that are very popular are not by definition good. Look At McDonald's or Twilight for a start. XD
Not to dis The Prestige, but though it was packed with actors in it I liked, I did not like any of the characters and didn't care about what happened to them. I do not like Edward Norton, yet I wanted Eisenheim to succeed in The Illusionist. That right there indicates better storytelling.
The styles of the movie are so very different it's hard to compare them. The Illusionist had a soft visual palate with a dash of vibrancy, with the acting and the plot understated, everything was pretty subtle. Nothing was big, it did not feel like a big Hollywood production. The Prestige very much felt like a Hollywood movie, everything was a little more forced, a little more false, seemed less real and more obviously a movie, all the settings, inside or outside, felt like movie sets to me. I was able to fall into and enjoy The Illusionist with ease. I just couldn't get immersed in the world of The Prestige, maybe because it was a bit more fantastical and harder to believe, and everyone so unpleasant.
Anyway...I think objectively the movies are pretty equal. Subjectively The Prestige was a better movie for you and The Illusionist for me.
Giving my vote... Prestige i liked more. Although illusionist was great to. U really nailed it with your descriptions. To say votes dont matter on imdb is ridiculous though. Sure it doesnt mean everything but the consensus is... people like prestige better. Atleast on imdb. Ya mcdonalds sucks but sometimes it hits the spot. There soda keeps me coming back Best coke on the planet, i swear lol.

"Action flick." So in other words, you didn't see it.
sharethe Prestige which is an action flick
i like both.
they are different, and they both had flaws, specially concerning the far-fetched badly elaborated twists.
but that can be overloooked in films that are fun and beautiful to watch.
"It doesn't matter what Bram Stoker has told you... dead people don't come back from their graves"
If they both came out at the same time, how could one have copied the other? That doesn't even make sense.
shareI enjoyed them both. As others have noted they are quite different though set roughly in the same time period. I do prefer The Illusionist's love story to that in The Prestige.
shareThey were being made at the same time.
The Illusionist is a far better film.

These two films came out around the same time, and I don't see where how they could have copied the other. Also, as somebody pointed out, Both films have nothing to do with each other except that they deal with magicians in a time long ago.
From an entertainment point of view, I like THE PRESTIGE better, because I thought it was more ambitious in story, and had a great, and many excellent ideas. It was one of those films that I wished I wrote.
With that said, I thought THE ILLUSIONIST was probably a cleaner story.
Bottom line, thank God we have both film. By no means was one weaker or a pale imitation of the the other.
These films are VERY different. They are both good in their own way. I liked the prestige better but the illusionist was definitely an above average movie for sure.
shareThey were both adapted from books/novellas, neither film "copied" the other. I've read both books, the filmmakers made some changes in the adaptations, but if you liked the films, you should enjoy reading their original source material.

I liked both films, but enjoyed The Prestige more than the Illusionist, if I had to choose. I thought Rufus Sewell was better than Edward Norton (and I usually like Norton, but he just lacked any spark in this movie, and Jessica Biel didn't convince me of anything. They had no chemistry for me).
