A Very Sweet Line

I'm just watching the film now, and was quite touched by a line by Bill Nighy. In the elevator, where he denies anything is going on between them to a co-worker, as his reason he says "I fear you'd think less of her if she were with me."

You'd think less of her. He's not concerned for his own reputation, but for hers.

How beautiful.

I totally agree. I think that was one of the best lines in the movie.

Just watched this movie again, and yes that line was superb.

Personally, if I had been the other chap in the elevator, I wouldn't have thought less of either no matter what was going on. Although I may have been jealous.

I actually thought that the actor playing opposite Lawrence conveyed just that sentiment; he seemed incredulous, as if to say, "You lucky bastard."

It is a line filled with great tenderness, and at the same time it saddened me because it showed how little Lawrence thought of himself.

Bill Nighy is a tremendous actor. He can be funny (Love Actually), hateful (The Constant Gardener) or moving (this movie, Notes on a Scandal). Great character, great performance, great movie.

Whoever you are, I've always depended on the kindness of strangers...

It was just on yesterday, and I noticed the gravity of that line as well.

reply

I agree that we would all like to see beauty that struck us selfless. Great line.
