Wow, kinda harsh don't you think? What's wrong with the script?

Watch the original movie or read the book by the real life Helen North Beardsley and come back to me and tell me what is right with this script. In an attempt to change the story to fit modern thinking they removed all the entertaining and essential parts of the real life story or the partially fictional Hollywood version of the story released in 1968.
