I never found out when it came out, so I'll ask now...
WHY did they have Beowulf bang Grendel's Mom?
I'm pretty sure he didn't in the original.

In an interview with Gaiman and Avary they explain that they came up with the idea of making the dragon Beowulf's son so the events of the poem translate better for a script for a movie. In the poem, time immediately advances 40 years after Beowulf kills Grendel's Mom, and Beowulf has to kill some dragon to save his kingdom. In the movie, all the major events of the poem all relate to one another and Beowulf's character also has some major flaws that get to be redeemed in the end.
