Grendel Got Off Easy Considering...

all the damage and murder he committed in the most horrible ways . I would have used his weaknesses against him a little bit longer . I saw fire was one weakness, his eardrum another and the most painful for him . They said it was hard to kill him because his skin was hard and reptilian and scaly , thick . Well, he had eyes and that eardrum and fire was painful to him . I guess I would have made him suffer a little bit longer than just slamming his arm off in a door . He deserved more than just that . I mean he was tearing the limbs off people, ripping them apart , skewering them like kabob , impaling them on anything . Like I said , he got off easy. In all actuality , Beowulf put him out of his misery .

I actually found myself feeling a bit sorry for him during the battle scene. Not really sure why, though, considering all of what you said.

I thinks that's exactly it. Plus, he was so deformed and dependent on his mother you almost had to feel sorry for him. I'm going to have to whip out my Seamus Haney copy and read the poem again. Thanks!

Great suggestion!! It's on my list!

Him being hard to kill had nothing to do with his skin. He was the kin of Cain (biblical character), who was cursed along with all his descendants, and as a result he was immune to weapons (hence why Beowulf used no weapons, even though he claimed it was to make the fight "equal").
