(major spoilers) gold streak in the sea

After the old king jumps out of the tower, did anyone else notice the streak of gold in the water heading towards the dead king's body as a wave crashed over him - possibly Grendel's mother coming to say goodbye to him like she does with Beowulf himself at the end?

Chihiro: You don't remember your name?
Haku: No, but for some reason I remember yours.

reply

Ha! I thought the exact same thing! But what I'd like to know is why did he suddenly decide to throw himself off a cliff?

I'm guessing you watched it on Five?!...

I did watch it on five! Thing is I watched it twice on IMAX and didn't notice that bit

Well it was the first time I've seen it, I'm quite surprised at how 'adult-themed' it is! I might actually get it on blu-ray, I'm that impressed...

Still don't understand the low rating on here though?!

Guys... the gold streak was Grendel's mother. She made promise to make Beowulf king in exchange for the golden dragon chalice. He comes back to the castle, Hrothgar crowns Beowulf heir on the spot, and throws himself off the castle wall. And she just happens to be there at the very moment of his death and disappears with his body. She happens to be a sorceress. Ya think Grendel's mother MADE Hrothgar do this? Hmm...

It was Grendel's mother, but I don't think she came to say goodbye. She was collecting his soul (as well as Beowulf's at the end), in keeping with the Devil's bargain Hrothgar had made with her in order to be king. This was the source of his shame - the kingdom was cursed because of him and he knew his soul was doomed. When he realized that she'd gotten Beowulf's soul as well he tossed the hot potato (his reign) and jumped. Grendel's mother didn't need to make him do it; his own weighty conscience was enough.

The real tragedy was Wealthow's. Twice she was denied her rightful role as Queen to make the king an heir because Grendel's mother usurped each King's virility before she had the chance.

Did you also notice that Grendel's head looks like Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) the last time we see it? Spoookeeeee...

Tx. It took a moment but yeah, I see it. Damn spooky...

Wow, I actually see it too. Thanks for pointing it out. That is creepy.

Zemeckis likes doing that - changing one character's face to another's to suggest something (Contact, What Lies Beneath). One of his trademarks.
