Sexist

The male nudity in this is emphasized as being covered up, with impossble, rock-to-head level of subtley obscuring of Winstone's penis for an entire sequence lasting about 5 or 10 minutes. The female nudity, on the other hand, is emphasized as NOT being covered up, with a slow pan the front of Jolie's body and her then parading around for another sequence lasting 5 or 10 minutes. I myself am male, and not gay, but for crap's sake I would give up the world if this had just damn-well shown Winstone's penis.

Hahaha I saw this in 3D and for some reason I was convinced that if I leaned far enough to one side I'd be able to see past the objects hiding teh penis...

There is no female nudity in this....

Ladym00s is right, there is just as little female nudity in this movie as there is male nudity. Grendel's Mother's private area's (which would cause the movie to get an R rating) are censored by the golden liquid which is slowly leaving her body.
Besides, lack of nudity on a certain gender is not an indicator of a sexist movie. Now if the movie actually sent the message that Grendel's Mother was not deadly enough to kill an entire party of sleeping men without waking anybody else, then that would POSSIBLY indicate that it's a sexist movie.

Personally while I was watching this movie I wanted to see more female nudity. But then I realized it's all CGI, it's not the real thing so what does it matter? They ain't Angelina's real tits, you know.

reply

and yet the cgi does BEAT real tits in many cases, especially Angelina's.

Correct. Jolie isn't that curvy in real life, she's bony and whatnot.

You know what Peter. I will have to agree. I mean really. Beowulf was running around and figting in the nude. Doing all kinds of gymnast moves up and around the ceiling. The least they could of done was show something. I mean really. If the guy is running around naked, stop placing objects in front of him everytime the camera get's on him. It's not real.

reply

Yea, there are not many movies that actually show penises...I rarely see them, in fact I've only seen one. I think it's more of the fact that guys love to see breasts usually...I think most guys do, but I'm girl so I can only draw form what I see in guys, but trust me, us girls don't wanna see a penis really.

The part where he's all fighting naked is kinda retarded and it may have been a bit better if they just went ahead and did show something

Anyway, it would appear that one's best chance to see full frontal male nudity is in movies made by gay men. ("Shadowboxer" offers quite a bit of male nudity, for instance, as does the aforementioned "A Room with a View".)

reply

Sexist against women? Rubbish. If anything it's sexist against men, it makes them look weak and foolish.

I was just thinking the same thing! After being fed a steady diet of female nudity since forever, it's actually refreshing when they do throw in some nude males. Even if (especially if) it does cause a homophobic uproar (see Watchmen).

That first fight Beowulf had with Grendel, it seemed they went out of their way to hide it, regardless of the fact it would've been a CG penis anyway!

The real sexism is how they portrayed women in this. Either as silly stupid fools or as evil seducing monsters. I mean, really? It's like every guy's dream - a silly pretty wife and a hot, naughty lover on the side. I'm so sick of it. Fine if that's what you men want, but why can't we get the same thing for us girls? I'd like a sweet handsome husband and a hot sex-on-legs for a lover. But no way you'll get to see that in a film. And especially see it as something normal. No one judged Beowulf for sleeping with almost every woman he met.

And btw, this film isn't R rated? All that dismembering and blood, and still no R?? Jeez, what does it take?

reply

Hey good point, kelly! Yep, women are either whores and/or stupid and men are too insecure to want to see the same stereotypical behaviour in reverse. It appears that our filmmakers have decided what's good for the gander is not profitable, either. I mean, who buys sex? The part with old Beowulf having the old wife over here but jumping on the young girl over there, I found repulsive. It's a tired old message. This movie was full of tired cliches and terrible accents.

Blood, guts and beheadings are fine, too, I mean it's all just animated anyway, right? But no, I don't know what's up with the rating either, it's not a kid's movie.

Besides all that, there was something about this movie overall, that I just couldn't get into for some reason. Maybe had I seen it in 3D at the theatre ...but, probably not, now that I'm thinking about it.

But I do like the story...& believe it or not, the Sci-Fi channel's version (Grendel) was actually, IMO, better.

That's because you dumb women will then start crying out that women are not sluts, which, in fact, they are in real life. Start a petition, love.
