His "sword" didn't kill her, it impregnated her. The imagery in that scene was *ahem*, very suggestive. With her stroking the sword, and it melting and spilling out between her legs. When Beowulf says "I need no sword to kill you" it means (although he didn't intend it to mean this) he'd need to have no dick in order to be able to kill her.
It's a very well written movie for modern times, with quite a few layers of subtext running beneath the surface.
I'm convinced Brendan Gleeson lopped her head off while the credits were rolling, saying "I've no pintle, you'll not seduce me, wench."
