Were Anthony Hopkins, Brendan Gleeson and John Malkovich doing live action? They almost looked real. Obviously, Ray Winstone and Robin Wright were CG using motion-capture for facial expressions and body movement.
shareIt was all motion capture as far as I know. But some of the actors you've named had their likenesses transferred to the characters as well (I would imagine through sensors on their faces). I understand your confusion though since Anthony Hopkins's and Angelina Jolie's characters look so lifelike in this film.
