Also...probably...because Beowulf is considered one of the greatest pieces of classical liturature in existance, ranking among stories such as Homer's Odyssey & Dante's Divine Comedy.

They didnt want to keep younger audiences from seeing the film, being that it is widely taught in liturature courses all around the world.

They would want to keep it as true to the original story as they can, but at the same time, keeping clean enough to be viewed by younger audiences so it could be shown in high school courses.

Thats my theory anyway.

I wondered this too, because theres some truly repulsivly gory bits , such as Grendel chowing down on
Costas Mandylor's head, plus Grendel himself is such a nasty lookin fuuk.
But I find it hard to believe that all the gory bits were castraed out of the theater version,
there would hardly be a movie left to show lol.

i am watching this for the second time, and i can honestly say i had nightmares the first time i saw it.

i really can't imagine why this wasn't a 15, from an educational point of view this wouldn't be taught until secondary school anyway.

BTW, it was Grendel not the gore that got me lol

The must have gotten away with a lot because it's a cartoon of sorts. And likely the censors were so ill-educated that they thought this was the story of Beowulf, and should get cut some slack for that reason.

On content, it deserves a hard rating. There's a lot of brutal and nasty stuff.

This wasn't the first graphically violent animated movie.

Have you seen Heavy Metal, Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Wizards, Fist of the North Star, Golgo 13 The Professional, Wicked City etc.

All before Beowulf came along.

Lol I was just thinking exactly this then scrolled down and saw you echo my thoughts.

They got away with all the gore because it's a cartoon. Had this been live-action, it would have been rated R.
