Why does he go nude unless it's a normal thing back then

From what I remember they were expecting Grendal to appear that night and he wanted to fight the beast bare. No armor, and no clothing because it also had no armor and no clothing.

I've baited my hook with my own underwear. Is it wrong that I hope to catch a fish I can relate to?-Ragdoll.
