SCARIEST OF THEM ALL

I never watched any of the popular original versions of Asian horror films until recently. I just watched Shutter, Ringu, and Ju-On. I saw these all on different days during the same week, and I have to say, Shutter is the scariest, hands down. I could NOT sleep that night!!! I am a huge horror movie fanatic, and this has never happened to me before. Of course some films have caused me to have recurring nightmares (mostly involving zombies, lol). But the night that I watched Shutter, I could not sleep AT ALL since I kept imagining Natre pulling the covers off of me. And I just could not get the image of her sitting on the hood of the car out of my head! (The only other time I've seen an image as scary was in the movie The Evil Dead.)

I know that most people would probably disagree with me, but I just didn't think the ghost in Ringu was that scary. Most of the time, her hair was covering her entire face, and that just doesn't produce an image that's too scary for me. The story is definitely original and creepy, but eh, it can be a bit overrated.

As for Ju-On, the face of the ghost seemed almost...goofy looking. What made it pass as scary was the jittery movement of her body and how it was bloody. And I did NOT find the little boy scary AT ALL though!

Again, I really do think that Shutter is the scariest of them all. The images stand out, and the story is original and deeply disturbing as well. I'm actually sooo glad that they've decided to come out with a remake, not for the movie itself, but had I not seen the commercial for the remake, I would never have known about the original Thai version.

I'm glad you liked it. Of the three films you mentioned, I liked Shutter the best as well. However, Ju-on 2 is one hell of a movie. I think it's much better than Ju-on 1.

The scariest film I've ever seen is Noroi: The Curse (2005) from Japan. You should check that one out.

Also, the makers of Shutter made another film entitled Alone (2007), which is also very good.

I agree! The scariest idea for me was the end, finding out she was just there, sitting on your shoulders! You can't just run away from it because she's already there!

Another great Asian horror film you should see (if you haven't seen it yet) is "A Tale of Two Sisters".
