Saw the terrible remake, should I even bother with this?

I just watched the wretched American remake. I had considered watching the original but now that I know what happens throughout, is it even worthwhile?

I'm pretty tired of the "creepy Asian girl" cliche that has become common in horror films lately. As well as the "distorted photograph" cliche which was blatantly stolen from Ringu.

If these and other cliches are absent from the original, I might venture a viewing...

As for the "wretched" American remake, did you take the time to listen to the special features where they explain just why it was made? A large percentage of DVD watchers can't read fast enough to follow along with the subtitles or they just don't want to bother with them. I had heard so many comments about how horrible the American remake was, that I got the "original". I honestly can't say it was a bit scarier or better made, or the acting was any better.

And as for "Asian girls", what nationality would actresses from Asian countries be? American? Spanish? Why that is considered a cliche I have no clue. A cliche is "a trite phrase or expression also the idea expressed by it".

And as for "venturing a viewing" since you already said the plot was wretched, you were tired of "creepy Asian girls", and thought that the spirit photographs you consider as merely "distorted", why do you think you'd like the original any better? If you already have a preconceived notion that it is full of all the ideas you dislike in movies, why do you think you'd like this one any better?

It isnt a cliche, the idea of this long haired 'creepy asian girl' is built into eastern culture, the same way something like the typical drawing of a ghost or the stereotypical slasher is in ours.

This distorted photo gives some subtlety to the movie, would you rather some pathetic in your face 'hostel'-esque photo to be thrown at you. Im sure you'd laugh.

Hell yes, watch it!!! As with the trend of asian U.S remakes, Shutter was utterly abismal. The original is for my money the greatest of all asian horror films for this genre. Turn out the lights, and crank up the DTS, and you will love it!

It's not only eastern culture though, it's part of SE Asian culture as well, Shutter is 1 example.

That statement in itself provides a good starting point for a screenplay for the next big horror flick (or a Michael Moore documentary)... "The land of the illiterate".

Yes. I assure this film is nothing like the american version. it's actually good.

I checked back to see if I was the only one who took issue with your post & decided to check what you'd posted in the past. I came to one conclusion. You just hate movies! Every movie you posted about you had one complaint or another. I don't understand why you even watch movies. There has never been a movie made that didn't have one glitch or another. The majority of us just ignore it and enjoy the movie for what it is, an art form, entertainment, etc. It seems that you only watch movies to find something to complain about. This movie you are complaining about it and you've never even seen it.

Lighten up and just enjoy the movie for what it is. Even the remake had some good moments. I guess it all depends on what you are expecting when you watch it. If you're looking for something to complain about, you'll always find it.

Charlenelv,

No, I don't hate movies. I just hate bad ones. I don't have the time or the desire to watch them like you apparently do. When a movie wastes my time, it annoys me and getting it off my chest on a message board is a decent release. You go ahead and continue your mindless and naive pursuit of mediocrity and enjoy the "art" of Michael Bay, Uwe Boll and other hacks.

Only an obsessive-compulsive personality would waste time and search a stranger's profile. You're clearly a weirdo. Oh and by the way, a cliche (according to Miriam-Webster) can also mean:

"a trite or hackneyed plot, character development, use of color, musical expression, etc. (in art, literature, drama, etc.)"

Nice try, but it's a child's game to get caught up in semantics.

For the record, I enjoyed the original "Shutter."

I guess you're a hater by nature huh? Every post is negative, a critique or a passionate hate for something, ie. like what you just did to the poster here. If you can devote so much time hating something, why not devote equal time to loving something? Unless you just enjoy the negativity?

Yup I loved the original, haven't seen the American version mainly due to the fact that I can't see what they could do to improve this incredibly creepy, utterly awesome film! Remakes are rarely as good as the originals, I would give this one a try for sure.
