Number of reasons. One might argue that they are scared of the consequences, be it jail or anything. But you could also see that it was really late and on a deserted road. What is the chance of hitting someone in school uniform there? They might have had some kind of bad feeling about it. Last but not least, it's not as uncommon as you think that people drive away after accidents. Not many people are eager to get out and know for sure that you killed someone.
However, their actions after the accident are odd. Like, why didn't they fix up the car? Especially before asking that road worker what had happened. I mean it's like so obvious that they were the ones who hit that pole. Damaged car, unnatural interest in what happened. Even asking if there were injuries and being all surprised when they hear noone was injured.
