Matt and Kris as endgame?

I just started watching the show and I love it, even though it is like 5 years too late. I think that Ryan and Genvieve have amazing chemistry and I found it interesting that Ryan actually auditioned for the role of Matt. I can't really picture Micah playing anyone other than Matt, but if they had originally cast Ryan as Matt and kept Nicole as Dani, and Genvieve as Kris, do you think that Matt and Kris would have actually ended up together instead? Not sure who would have played Jr. though, or if the show would be completely different, since the role was added specifically for him right?

And also,
did the writers say what was going to happen in season 5, since the wedding wasn't the original plan until the show was cancelled?

The writers screwed with the Kris/Matt relationship until it was somewhat unrecognizable. I mean, who keeps characters apart after only one kiss and no other hint of chemistry or sexual tension written into the script for like two and a half seasons...only to decide seemingly out of nowhere that they suddenly had extreme amounts of chemistry? Also, why should we be expected to believe that two characters could go from working together all day every day for two and a half years without issue to falling into bed together just because she happened to be sleeping in his bed? I get that there could conceivably be some sort of possessive male jealousy thing that gets ignited by the bed thing...but really. It's just kind of unbelievable in the extreme that Kris would suddenly decide she 'just had to have' Matt simply because he found her attractive for like two minutes. It's equally unbelievable to me that neither of them would talk about their burgeoning feelings to such a degree that they had to have a fight in order to get their "passion" for one another out in the open.
This is not "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and they are not Xander and Cordelia.
The 'fight-to-love-scene' thing only works if the two characters have a herstory of discord and passionate mutual hatred. Otherwise, it comes across as rather lame and lazy writing.

I agree with someofusarebrave. I haven't finished the show yet, I'm watching the beginning of season 4 right now, but wow I hate watching Matt and Kris together. They're boring, there is no spark, no play even... and Kris and Junior were considering getting back together not long before...I admit, I ended up doing dishes or playing with the dog while their scenes played.

I don't really believe that the writers changed the ending just to please fans tbh. I'd have to see the interview to believe that. Most writers will stick with their intended ending.

The only way I could see that being true is if they changed their minds about the endgame way back after the first few episodes of Season 1.

Just because Kris got with Matt in Season 3 doesn't mean that was the intended endgame. That could have just been closure on that relationship.

Junior was always written having a special connection with Kris, from the very beginning. As early as the 4th episode of Season 1 even. Junior is the only one out of Dan, Matt, and himself to pick up on the fact that Kris was hurt by her mother having lots of b/fs when she was growing up. He's the only one that could tell. That's when he said the "I see you" line. That's the writers trying to show people that her and Junior have something different. Even the opening credits when they introduced Genevieve were all Kris/Junior moments.

And it only continues from there. The first half of Season 1 is really the only time there was any real attraction to Matt from Kris.

And in Season 2, all they played up was Kris/Junior and the obstacles keeping them apart. Kris was obviously in love with Junior and vice versa. When his club was open they did the whole eyes meet across the room thing, and they almost got back together so many times. But they couldn't stay away from each other. Matt meanwhile was just a close friend at this point.

So I dont' see any evidence in the writing to show that they all of a sudden changed their minds about anything in Season 3/4. That seemed to be where they were headed all along.

I've just seen this show for the first time and I loved it, but, Matt and Kris together did nothing for me. They had no real chemistry, were more like brother and sister and it was obvious from the beginning that Junior and Kris were meant to be together as he was always the one there for her. Even during her relationship with Matt, she was more preoccupied with Junior. ........ If the actors had switched roles, I don't know how it would have worked

I agree with everyone here that the show really pushed Kris & Junior as the end game couple before halfway into Season 1, and Season 3's Kris/Matt pairing was to stir drama more than the characters finally addressing their nonexistent sexual tension.

Matt and Kris didn't have much chemistry. It seemed like Kris only wanted Matt as retribution to Raintree. Season 3 was about her trying to cement her place at the ranch, and Matt was a proxy for that desire. Being with Junior would mean splitting her loyalty (every season this was the cause of their break ups - Kris and Junior had to choose each other or their families, Junior usually bit the bullet, but Kris was reluctant to follow until the series ended). Matt got used poorly by Kris quite a bit, and it was disheartening to see the writers use him as Kris's doormat for the final season.
