WHat happened to this movie?

Besides just saying this movie sucked or something, does anyone know why the release never went nationwide and it got the bum's rush to DVD?

reply

released in the south and in LA and NY. The company involved in the release had DVD experience but no theatrical, so they were looking for a DVD release from the beginning. that's my theory anyway

reply

Correct. The film was released in thetares (limited), but with a mere $3 million budget the film will become a very safe and profitable venture with the DVD sales/rentals market after the brief limited thearical run in spite of the film's urban theatrical potential and potentially expensive PR push to secure exhibitors.

I never saw it in the South . . . didn't make it to theaters in Charlotte, NC.

It's all about money. Silver Nitrate doesn't have the kind of cash that Sony does. Sony decided to let Silver Nitrate have the theatrical distribution rights, and they don't have the cash to facilitate a large release, so they tested it in cities where Training Day and Cuba's movies had done well in the past, hoping that it would perform well in those cities. It didn't do the numbers that they wanted, so it went to DVD shortly thereafter. If Sony had released it on a bunch of screens things might have been different.
