It was a nasty blow, but I think it would have been pretty feasible to survive it.... So I think it was the pool.

I feel like the mallet would have done enough damage to at least put her in a coma or cause brain damage. If you've ever read The Shining (or seen the TV movie from '97), you know those things can do some damage.
