BBC Studios needs fresh ideas if it is to take on Netflix, says National Audit Office

The BBC’s commercial arm is overly reliant on ageing brands such as Doctor Who and Top Gear and is struggling to land significant new business in the face of competition from Netflix, the National Audit Office has found.

Since it was spun off as a commercial entity in 2017, BBC Studios has been able to make shows for both the BBC and rival broadcasters.

It was hoped that the company would create new money-spinning formats and popular brands to be sold around the world, a crucial strategy in its fight against Netflix, Amazon and other US giants.

The report also found that BBC Studios’ headline sales in 2018-19 fell by three per cent to £1,373 million, seven per cent lower than forecast in its 2018 business plan. That was partly down to a drop in DVD sales, traditionally a significant source of income for the BBC’s commercial division.

The BBC and all similar networks need to die. They were invented in an age when there were only 2 TV stations you could watch. It was important therefore that Television should not allowed to be controlled by private individuals. However in the age when we have thousands of TV channels and anyone can make a youtube channel, they have been defunct for decades. They are just parasitic organisms at this stage, interested in preserving their own status.

BBC certainly doesn't need 4 main channels, plus news, kids, etc. Just two plus kids, politics can stream. Put a few hours of news on one channel like it used to be.

Will be much cheaper and they can focus on fewer, better quality programs. Let the private sector do more.

The only thing is some programs probably wouldn't get made. A lot of stuff that is made is made because they have a duty to make it like educational stuff. Theres been interesting stuff made that probably wouldn't normally
