Beginning and Ending Shots

At the very beginning of the film, there's a shot of the Queen as she's being painted for a portrait. She's looking sideways, and then looks straight in the camera. At the end of the film, there's a shot of Princess Diana, turning and looking straight into the camera, freeze frame. I can't believe it wasn't done on purpose. It almost seems like the story is saying that, in the end, Diana had the last word. The Queen actually bowed down to her. What do you think?

To a certain degree, yes, Princess Diana did get the last word and this film does seem to take to that notion. However, you do hear the Queen caution Tony Blair at the end of the film on how fleeting popularity can be and how one's fortunes in politics can change very quickly. The Queen is shouldered aside, but she doesn't go quietly.

You're right. And at the end of the day, the queen is still there, still popular, and Princess Diana is slowly becoming just a fond and sad memory. There's something to be said for endurance.
