Bangor, Maine = Atlanta, Georgia?
I enjoyed this movie for its quirky humor and interesting characters. The locations really distracted me, however. I currently live outside Boston and recognized several of the small towns. As I watched the final scenes set in Atlanta, I couldn't help but think that the Victorian and Gothic architecture and evergreen trees did not quite "fit." The final, climactic conversation in the middle of an "Atlanta" park was almost completely lost on me as my jaw dropped and I quickly realized the true shooting location: Broadway Park in Bangor, Maine (my hometown). Outside of Stephen King flicks, I've never seen a movie use Bangor as a location. While cool (to me), I couldn't help but wonder...(1) Why choose a northern city for a southern setting? (2) What is the filmmaker's connection to Bangor (it's not evident in their biographies)? (3) Why didn't they just modify the script to have the parents reside in Bangor? There was no particular importance given to Atlanta in the script...all they really needed was a destination for their road trip, so why not Maine?
Does anybody have any inisght or other thoughts on the shooting locations?
