Did anyone else think emily was a whiny little bitch?
I would've probably dumped her the first minute into the movie!

shareI could not believe her tantrums. She was seriously psycho. I can't believe that he put up with her that long. If someone ever slammed the dishes at me like she did in the first scene...my next move would definitely not be to invite them to go on a road trip with me. That would be it.

Ditto!
shareShe was an interesting and real character at least, which is far more than you can say about the laughably bad characters of Josh and Rhett.
shareI've only ever been in relationships like that. I 'got' him so much. Trust me, they exist.
shareI think they were all realistic.

her actions were the product of her feelings. and sure, that makes for some "psycho" behavior. but it's generated by the fact that her relationship with josh is lacking. and not because they don't love each other, but because josh is too cowardly to admit to himself that this is "it" and admit to emily that she is what he wants. he's scared of growing up, and she's scared she's in love with someone who doesn't love her, because he doesn't let her know.
their relationship ends when she asks him at 2 in the morning why he loves her, and he can't/won't give her an answer -- probably because he's busy being terrified by the idea of marriage. that's not her obsession; it's his. she wasn't asking for a proposal, she was asking for a declaration of love, because that's what she needed to hear, and even though it was at 2 in the morning josh should have given her that. because that should never be a hard question.
the reason this movie is so sad is because neither of them wants it to end. josh is just scared of getting "trapped" and emily is scared of being a stupid girl in love with a guy who might not deserve it.
She's a very realistic character, but those type of people are constantly "checking in" due to extreme insecurity and anxiety. It's exhausting and exasperating to be around.

Agreed. I'm not saying I didn't UNDERSTAND why she was bitchy...just that I wouldn't have put up with it. If she didn't like the relationship, she's free to leave.

wow... i didn't think she was a whiny little bitch at all!... i think she was sick of putting up with being slighted alot. her confidence was a little low... but i think she was quite human/realistic. jeez, people.

i see we had two completely different interpretations about this movie. a) SHE is the one that breaks up first. only after the fact does he concede that this is probably the way to go. b) he wasn't whipped. if he had been he would have told her all those things that she wanted to hear, just so she would feel more secure. He wasn't capable or willing to commit to her. I tend to agree with the above interpretion of r-cerkovnik. you say that "he fooled around with her". the movie implies, and there was even dialogue, referring to the fact that they were together for a long time. definitely not just "fooling around". you make it sound like the baby-talk was purely forced or fake on his part, simply done to please her, but i think it was meant to appear natural and genuine and have nothing to do with him catering to her. yes, she seems to have emotionally overreacted at pts (i.e. throwing dishes), but it wasn't about him being whipped, but about the two wanting two different things out of the relationship and the roadtrip just brought the issues to the breaking point. i really don't think this has anything to do with the "pussification of men," whatever you may mean by that. sounds like you were projecting some other issues onto this movie....
shareEmily was clearly written to be the typical woman. She'll never be happy because she always expects there to be something "more" when there isn't. If you'll remember, the argument that lead to the breakup started when she asked Josh what would happen between his brother and the stranger he just "married". He said it would "last about a week and then he'll go home". It was a logical conclusion and he was being realistic, but she flipped out. Her idea of love comes from crappy movies starring Hugh Grant. She lives in some fantasy world. No man is ever good enough for a woman like that. Fellas, if you ever find a woman who is the OPPOSITE of Emily, don't let her get away.
shareYes. That makes it all the more gratifying when she cries.
shareI can see why people would say she's 'whiney,' etc. I'll leave most of the opinions on her up to subjectivity; but I think it's wrong to say that SHE'S the one who will never be happy and that she always expects 'more.' He's the one who won't commit. Your view seems a bit too tinged with past bad experiences.
I think the Duplass brothers made a serious error in not using their first opening sequence and including the scene where she discusses her relationship with her female roommate. These deleted scenes are on the DVD and frankly would have improved the movie.
Emily wanted stability. When she said that she deserved better, I don't think that she meant that she deserved someone better then Josh. i think she meant that she deserved more of a commitment. She felt like she was at an age where she was ready to settle down. To be honest with you Josh and Rhett were just acting like stupid kids. She wanted something from her boyfriend that he had no interest in ever giving her. The situation was so sad. It made me angry. Because that's the way things are in real life when it comes to issues like marriage. Men and women's motives are entirely different. Women just like the idea of growing old with someone and raising a family together in the tradition that they were brought up in. Men just want vagina , like was stated in an earlier post, and they'll put up with alot of crap to get on the regular. But if it means sacrificing their "freedom" for it then they got no problem looking for vagina someplace else.I feel so bad for her she wasted all that time with him and ended up with nothing but a broken heart.

She was very realistic to girlfriends I had in the past. Most girls try to change you into someone else and when you are not a superstar you feel guilty. It was very realistic I liked this movie a lot.
shareYIKES. i'm sorry you've had girlfriends like that then! she was so irritating in this movie that i almost stopped watching it halfway through. i kept thinking, "i hope he dumps her and this focuses more on josh and rhett," because their characters were truly interesting. or even more on their relationship with the dad. i get kind of annoyed just thinking about it!
shareOh yeah man I was a model so I always had "hot" girlfriends. Even though they seem nice and sweet, when you are in a relationship with them they want your 100% attention all day and night and try to transform you into how they want you to be.
shareI think the whole point of Emily's character was to be annoying. She was the driving force of the movie because she made so many demands on her BF that he finally cracked down and the whole mood of the film completely changed after that. I think she was a well written character in that she had insights into their relationship that were completely different than her boyfriend's.
This is my signature!
Emily and Josh were supposed to be about the same age, I think, but she was about five years more mature. She loved him and didn't want to leave him but didn't want to drift from day to day with a 26 year old high-school dude. She's sad to have to leave him, but she'll never be able to live an adult life as long as she stays with him (unless he accepts adult responsibility, which he'll have to do if he wants to be like his father, who he admires.) She's not whiny but frustrated and forced into a sad choice.
shareMore mature?!? She is a very realistic creation as a character, but "mature" is not a word I'd use to describe her.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, although I'm not sure about the "insights". But she was definitely written to be that way; the Netflix description even calls her "high maintenance".

They are both LOSERS. As a man, I would not stay with any woman who would throw a childish tantrum and push the dishes onto the floor like Emily did. If I were a woman, I would not be with a guy who called me "dude." She is definitely crazy (of course, all women are), and he is definitely one obtuse dude.
