Americans, wake up!

I think that the American audiences should rebel against the changes and alternate versions of foreign movies wanted by their distributors making pass them by fearful people.

It's the test audiences/critics who are to blame. When a film with different endings is released, the filmmakers use test audience/critics to decide what endings should be used. They may get different results in different countries, but for the film's release, they go with what the test audiences prefer. Apparently, for this movie, the American test audiences decided the "happier" ending was better. Apparently, most Americans outside of the test audiences/critics (along with most of the world) disagreed.

I'm not sure how this "rebellion" would work, or how effective it would be. I hate the way foreign films get hacked to bits, ostensibly to make them more palatable for US audiences, but nothing's going to change. It's a dumb thing for distributors/studios to do . . I can't imagine many soccer moms were going to see The Descent in theaters anyway, and if they did, how many were going to find the US version substantially better?

The good news is that people who care about such things can easily get ahold of a high-quality copy of the original versions of most any movie. So, it's not much of an issue now.
