shareHaider999 I wouldn't bother with the special edition of Swing Girls unless you can understand Japanese-the Extras on Japanese DVDs are rarely subtitled so it may be a waste of money,considering how expensive it is.Actually Swing Girls is being released in cinemas in Hong Kong next month,so I imagine that there will be a DVD release 4 months later which may include the special features with English subtitles-it'll be cheaper too!

shareI heard of Conduct Zero-Korean film right? it sounds cool.Kids return is great too! My favourite Japnese director is Shunji Awai-he directed Love Letter,All about Lily Chou Cou and Hana & Alice,which are all worth seeing.

shareHi haider999, if you really liked Swing Girls you should definately try out Shinobu Yaguchi's previous film to this called Water Boys. . it has the same premise as Swing Girls and just as much feel-good-factor! (I mean, boys learning sychronized swimming. . what could be funnier!?) :)
Conduct Zero is great too (although the title is translated as Manner-Zero in Korea)

whats the difference between the HK version of a movie and a japanese version of the movie? does the HK one have better quality or something? thanks
sharehi haider999, Water Boys has Naoto Takenaka from Swing Girls (the Maths Teacher who loves Jazz but hasn't got a clue about how to play music!). . he is very funny in Water Boys but don't want to say to much about it and ruin it for you.
The best quality dvd of Water Boys (audio and visual) is always going to be japanese dvds as they encode their movies at the optimal bit rate. Sadly the price reflects the quality you pay for with all japanese dvds. . but i would go for the 2Disc korean version (if you can speak japanese as it has alot of the extras from the japanese 2Disc version and it's half the price!)
. . i really love Shimotsuma Monogatari (Kamikaze Girls), think you'll like that too!
Oh, forgot to mention if you need English subtitles on you japanese movies then HK versions are not always the best option as somtimes they can be slightly inacurate in there translations.

I have the HK edition of Waterboys and the subtitles are fine-the disc is probably the same as the standard Japanese edition-no extras.
I know what you mean about those dodgy subs on HK DVDs George,so I am crossing my fingers that the Kamikaze Girls DVD is one of the better translations!
And I think I mentioned it before,but Jozee,the Tiger & the Fish is well worth seeking out.I have the Korean 2 disc edition,though as usual,the extras aren't english subbed.
Yes the Korean 2disc DVD of Jozee, the Tiger & the Fish was really nicely packaged and with loads of extras too!
Do you like Shunji Iwai's movies? as Hana & Alice (really beautiful movie) is also available in a Korean 2disc DVD edition.

Actually Shunji Awai is my favorite director! I bought the HK DVD of Hana & Alice,but I have most of his others too-I love them all.
I recently got a film called Survive Style 5 which was amazing,also an animated film called MINDGAME which I love.
I really want to see a film called Vital,by the director of A Snake of June,so I'm ordering that soon.

'Survive Style 5' was a bit to disjointed for me, think i'll need to see it again. . but 'MINDGAME' blew me away!! (incredible wasn't it!!)

I watched Aoi Haru 3 nights ago for about the 5th time (also one of my faves),I wil be getting Cha no Aji next week too (Tadanobu Asano is one of my favourite actors).I also have a few older Japanese films,like Onibaba (a classic) and Woman in the Dunes.I read www.midnighteye.com to keep up with a lot of the more obscure releases that may not get a release over here,but Swing Girls is really special to me-I can't put my finger on just what makes this film so good-I think everything just works so well in it-the chemistry between the actors,the low-key humour,the music..everything!
HEEEYYYYY! can't believe you totally got my name (i tip my hat to you film buff!!), no one on here has got that yet and i usually have to give them a clue when they ask me ie: 'what's the most famous movie character that never existed?'
Anyway, back to Swing Girls. . i think you've kind of nailed it when you said 'i can't put my finger on it. . ', because let's face it, if we did know what it was we'd be all out there making movies huh! :)
I think with these kind of films it's all about the journey. With characters and actors that have great chemistry, you can't help but want them to reach and obtain their goal. We all know within the 1st 10mins of the movie what is gonna happen at the outcome (much like Water Boys) but it's the way they get there that's just so utterly charming, funny and immensely satisfying!
Bit off topic but I just got Kamikaze Girls on Hong Kong Region 3.The English subtitles are well translated and Picture & Sound quality are great.VERY cheap too!

I really liked Linda, Linda, Linda mainly because it's got the actress from Sympathy For Mr Vengeance (she's really good in this too). . but it is a completely different style of film to Swing Girls.
It's not as cute, predicatble and ultimately satisfying as Swing Girls (and i don't mean predictable in a bad way) but it is very charming in a way only the japanese know how to do! :)

I just saw Swing Girls, although I have the DVD for 3 months now haha.
I must say I love the movie, although the story/plot is really quite thin it is a real good feel-good movie, with good music and lovely actresses.
It's too bad you guys don't understand japanese 'cos the characters all talk in a funny, north-eastern accent!

The extra's weren't that interesting.. I could kill to see the Swing Girls' Live Concert! I'm goin' to Japan again pretty soon so I'm gonna try and find it.
Other Japanese movies I like are Warai no Daikgaku, Radio no Jikan, all Takeshi Kitano's movies (especially Kids Return), sick movies like Audition, Ichi the Killer, and ofcourse Ring 1 (2 and 0 are pretty lame) and Ju-on. Oh yeah, and Tampopo, that's a classic!
