Yonezawa...

I just returned from my summer vacation to the City of Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture in northern Japan... This is where they fimed Swing Girls. It is about 2 hours north of Tokyo on the Yamagata Shinkansen.

It is a really nice area of Japan, away from the urban mess of Kanto... and makes a great vacation get away...

if you want any advice on touring the area, let me know and i'll make a post

I was trying to locate Yonezawa on Google Earth but couldn't find it - maybe it is too small a city/town. Can you please provide some names of nearby cities to help me narrow the search?

I don't think I'll be heading for Yonezawa in the immediate future, just want to know where it is. I have to confess my first 'Swing Girls' DVD was a pirated copy from China - I bought a whole bunch and didn't put it in my DVD player until about a month ago. Since then I've purchase the 2-disc version, the OST, the Concert DVD and recording.

I have watched 'Sex Is Zero' and agreed it is good. The leading actress, Ha Ji-Won, is quite active and appeared in a wide range of movies, from romantic to thriller.

In general I like mystery, action, and thrillers so getting hooked on the 'Swing Girls' was quite a surprise to me. The SG storyline was quite straight-forward but was presented very smoothly by the director, and performed well by the actors (and, of course, actresses). I was surprise by the amount of attention it generated when I search for 'Swing Girls' on Yahoo, Google etc.

I have thought Yuika Motokariya (lead trombonist) to be the most likeable, but Juri Ueno (lead Saxaphone) seems to be a better actress.

I have purchased a DVD box-set of 'Engine', a Japanese drama in which Juri Ueno was featured. I look forward to seeing how she does in this part, which is entirely different from her role of Tomoko Suzuki in SG.

Summer in Yonezawa is hell on earth. I know, I've lived here for 3 years. I recommend spring or autumn. Although, if you like festivals, most of them are in the summer.

By the way, a lot (all of the school scenes) of the movie was filmed in nearby Takahata. I was riding my bike through there a month or so after I arrived and saw them filming.
