Decent but unremarkable. Wouldn't recommend for those over age 20.
I probably would've loved it when I was 15, and maybe the high score on IMDB is from millennial who saw it at that impressionable age. It was a rather simple movie that pretended to be intellectually deep.
1) The moral conflict isn't that difficult. Freedom vs. tyranny? Hmmm...
2) The movie is so vague politically that it could mean just about anything to anyone. Liberals, conservatives, libertarians and plenty of other groups have used this movie as an anthem to justify THEIR personal side and demonize THEIR political oppponents.
3) The protagonist is a mysterious super-strong action-hero badass who kills his foes with ease, is made of teflon, changes the world, gets the girl and dies a legend. All with slick ninja action. Isn't this what every 15 year old guy fantasizes himself to be? Why else would this be such a common trope?
4) 1984 has been done so many times. It also seems to copy Fight Club and The Crow a bit, but both I found to be better.
5) So much pseudo-intellectualism. The same kind that wouldn't tell the difference between astronomy and astrology. It talks about a lot of seemingly complex and grand ideas, but most exist as abstract ideas, co-existing dualities and such.
