Did anyone else notice?

In this slick but convoluted gangster flick, only two women appear: one as a one-minute walk-on by a giggly 'tootsie' very early on, and the second a four-minute appearance 70 minutes later.

Hong Kong filmmakers, reflecting the male-dominated culture itself, are notoriously patriarchal. It's rare to see a good part in HK films for female actors. There doesn't seem to be any requirement that women have at least SOME substantial place in HK films. I know it's not entirely true, but I often get the impression that Hong Kong ONLY produces gangster flicks or hell-fire, riddled-body-a-minute, shoot-em-up flicks with almost exclusive male casts and only token females, if, in fact, there are any females at all.

They're out there, HK makes comedies and dramas too. There are plenty of female roles in those. But in the movies you seem to be referring to, you're right, there aren't a lot of strong female roles, but you'll see them on occasion. But its the action movies that get the most attention worldwide, so your impression seems correct.
