I never watched both films(The untold story didn't had a VCD/DVD release in Singapore due to it's R21 rating and the DVD/VCD version of election is a edited version.)
But both films were accalmied catergory 3 flicks and received golden horse nominations and awards.
The Untold Story is more of an exploitation flick.
Election is not an exploitation flick like Untold Story (contrary to popular belief about Category III flicks). It's more deeper if you're into that kinda stuff.
you must have gotten the wrong information.
Election is a very different movie from The Untold story. I'm not sure how Election got a cat III. it is a crime/drama about the Triads. Election should only be compared to other triad movies.
you might want to compare The Untold story with Ebola Syndrome. both features Anthony Wong, and he was excellent in both movies.
Thats exactly why it was given its cat 3 rating. It deals with Triad culture and tradition in explicit detail. Even Jackie Chan's Crime Story was rated cat 3 for the same reason. It's the ratings board attempt to keep the allure of gang culture away from impressionable youths, and we all know how bad gang culture is/was in Hong Kong.
