help me out here.... (possible spoiler for this and 'Goodfellas')

I don't understand why they didn't just chop Big D up with a machete at the start of the film... the man is clearly a liability; he has no respect for triad tradition and is blatantly disrespectful and aggressively hot-headed - I'm surprised he was even in the running for Chairman.

He's a bit like Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, (as evidenced by the 'what are you laughing at?' scene at the start), but without the support or friendship from the others that afforded Pesci his short-term lifeline...

I see your point, but Big D had a profitable business to contribute to the Society too, right? I suppose that the fact that he was a liability wasn't enough to justify killing him off due to his cash.

maybe - I just don't get the impression that the Triads would be the type of people to let someone take the piss the way Big D does. If he was to be assassinated, I'm sure another of the group would be able to step in and take control of his business interests.

I think its because BIG D had a profitable business and he was not always that crazyy, he made friends and there were ppl that liked him. And because he was a part of the triad just like how italian mafia is u need to have a sit down and permission from everyone else before u can wack him

I think he isn't so hot-headed and stupid before he became the chairman,or he would be killed before the movie been finished. Ha ha

(Spoilers) He was bringing in the cash. It is only after Lok uses D to take over another egion (thus bringing in more cash) does Lok no longer need D. From this point on D is on borrow time and when he tries to suggest joint chairmanship, he gets his head bashed in with a rock.

you should be reading this spoiler only if you've seen the movie. Everyone is missing what is powerful about the scene: haunting. Not the brutal killing of D, but of a bvystander who happens to be there. What is poignant is that she is trying to save the life of the little boy who alsosees the murder. What happens next..... with the riding offf in the car istruly inspired cinema. In case somebody hasn't seeen the movie I've decided t only hint.

I have a couple questions about the end scene. It mostly has to do with the shovels and the fact that they don't show Lok digging the graves. Was that a planned hit on Big D all along? Was it a spur of the moment hit? And if so, why were there two shovels just randomly chilling there? Was Big D planning on killing Lok and that's why his wife got the kid to leave Lok and Big D? I myself have been leaning towards the assumption it was a planned hit on Big D all along and that those graves had already been dug, but maybe somebody has some other ideas.

I had the same question as original poster - Big D seemed nuts and a total liability and also didn't follow the triad rules.

Because time is changing, even the main-land china is turning into market-system competitive capitalism, and Big D was a very efficient leader on that regard; he makes money and capable to buy the favors from others. This film is in no way a romantic fantasy on "triads," it's all about business and power.

Your right in one respect he was kinda like Joe Pesci but Pesci was a middle man on the totem pole, Big D was an earner and a big fish. Big D had alot of muscle and he was feared even at the top of the leadership of the triads. He was fierce but short sighted, i have a feeling his wife might have handled his finances mostly and he was the aggressive kind who took over rival territory and intimidated others to amass his wealth. What he lacked in foresight he made up with ferocity and unpredictability. He was loyal however but it's ironic that Lok who was considered to be loyal turned out to be disloyal to his brother but i guess Big D had it comming.

Maybe he was also a 'made man', i.e. tradition permitted him to be an ass.

Mafia has the vertical management where the Don has ultimate power of whacking anyone. Hongkong triads has more horizontal management where bosses from all districts come to vote for decision like "The Commission"
