So who didn't see that coming? It looked like everything was okay...I figured Lok might throw Big D off of the roof earlier, but then I thought...okay, they're cool now. But once he mentioned "two chairmen" I was like...uh oh...and then once the camera showed just Big D going "Why can't I catch a single fish? I'll throw a grenade in with them!" I was like....uh ohhh.....

And then just sat with mouth agape for the next 3 minutes. Damn.

I actually didn't see it coming. Not like that, anyway.

One thing that bugged me though, when Big D was in the grave, he clearly wasn't hurt that badly or even dead (he was reacting to the dirt). You slam a rock down on someone like that over and over, there's going to be not a lot of the skull left.

Obviously they could kill the actor (especially since Tony Leung is one of their best), but they could have used a dummy or something in the grave. That would have looked better.

I once watched an interview with Tony Leung about the highlights of his career. He cited Election as one of his favourites. During the Election discussion, he spoke about this particular scene, which he said was one of the most difficult tasks he had to perform.

(Throughout the following explanation, Leung repeatedly said he was grateful to Johnny To and was appreciative of To's balance of creativity and compassion.)

In the original shot (not in the film), he tried to "act" dead, but the dirt kept entering his ear and nose holes and mouth, which made his body reacted involuntarily.

In the script, it was supposed to be just a long-distance shot of Yam dragging Tony's body up the slope only (this scene is in the film), but director Johnny To decided to film an unscripted close-up of Tony showing--slowly and barely--signs of life. You could see him blinking groggily in this part.

So that when he was in the grave (for a new shot), he was allowed to react naturally--moving his head and (as Leung demonstrated in the interview) his hand twitching--to show that although he was clearly severely injured, he was still alive. This was supposed to show the horror of him being buried alive.

If you look closely in the grave Lok's wife, or whatever the girl is, is under Big D and the way the bodies were thrown in their looked as if they we sitting at an awkward angle. I took Big D's movements in the grave as involuntary and caused by the way his body was sitting on the woman's. Given I've never buried a body but it seems completely plausible for the body to move as it did when a shovel full of dirt is thrown at it.

That having been said, now that I think back on the recent films that I have watched coming from Asia there seems to be one thing in common with all of them. Most of the characters that take a beating to head seem to be able to take a severe beating to the head. I saw the Devil comes to mind most prominently, so maybe its just a stylistic choice over there. People are immune to head trauma in Asian cinema!

I was so busy looking at the play-bar on my DVR I was totally surprised.
I was watching thinking when is this gonna end? My bar has already run out then wham!
Lok was a monster. I guess I should have realized it or he would not be in the Triad and under consideration as chairman.

At least Big D was straight up with what he was about. No wonder Big D gave in. He knew what Lok was capable of.

I was really confused the first time round I saw it, but it made sense when I watched that scene again. Firstly, I forgot that the kid was Lok's lol, I thought it was Big D's so that's one thing cleared up. When you watch the whole scene again, it really does just show that Big D was a major liability who was power hungry and not happy with what he already had. He AGAIN tried to change the rules. First he tried to take the chairman's position by force, and now he's trying to persuade Lok to change the rules so he could share the power. He overstepped the boundaries. The 2 candidates couldn't be any different. Lok's kid summed it up when he said that to catch fish, the secret was patience. Big D just couldn't grasp this concept. Although I didn't see this coming, it wasn't unexpected. Lok did what he could to bring Big D onto his side and keep him happy, but Big D just couldn't stick to what was his and in the end it cost him his life, and rightly so I suppose.

Yep, that's what I believe too. Not that Lok couldn't be ruthless indeed, also I kind of doubt he ever really cared for Big D - Lok was simply devoted to the clan, and knew that, when he befriended Big D, a truce between the two of them was the only (non-bloody) way to keep the clan in one piece. Not to mention that the friendship earned them the heads & the business of the other mob clan. But when Big D alluded to becoming co-chairman, it was obvious that the truce couldn't hold for long. Big D hadn't even secured his new position with Lok, and was already striving for more - it was only a matter of time before the conflict would be reopened. A harmless development was no longer possible, the only way out was for Big D to be killed - anything else would have torn the clan apart. Sure that Lok's action was shocking, but then he was a gangster, not a flower seller, and again, disturbing (and sudden!!) as it may have been, it was still the lesser of two evils.

It was such a pleasantly tranquil scene initially, I just knew someone would attack the other. I just wasn't sure who it would be.

I was more surprised that BIG D didn't fold on LOK earlier when the two of them killed the long haired boss guy when they lowered the garage (descriptive I know)

I admit I was so tired on first thought I did think that was Big D's son and he was now claiming him as his own but now I remember the scene where he previously got arrested and we saw his son

of course there wasn't going to be a happy ending with both sharing power. someone was going to get killed. the family leaving was the first cue.
