Dead on!

Bullies will continue to harass you when they KNOW it'll have an effect on you. Bullies are naturally known to be insecure, otherwise, they wouldn't waste their time. If they could do something to take away the things that they hate you for, they've succeeded in controlling you. If you have something that makes them want to attack you, flaunt it harder, and let them know they'll never get it.

Absolutely true. That girl had the wisdom and perspective of someone three times her age, which is extremely rare for a teenager. If more kids thought the way she does, bullying would not be an issue anymore, because the bullies wouldn't be getting the reaction they want. Vanessa was truly lucky that she found a friend like that eventually. Even if you only have one or two really nice, loyal friends in school, that's all you need.
