a mediocre film well marketed probably

So I watched this. No wonder it didn't get a major award. A bland rendition of a well known story. Anyone could have done that, Clowney's done nothing outstanding, neither did any of the actors or anyone working on this. What about the story? No insight, no original view of the events.

I'm also tired of seeing the same screen feces in every Hollywood drama. C'mon, Straithorn's Murrow? I see Straithorn, not Murrow. That woman's annoying too. Oh, and it's so freaking stylish in black and white. Clowney's full of sh!7.

I agree with the part about getting tired of seeing the same "faces" (not feces) in Hollywood movies. It kinda saturates the movie. But this movie is a good one. I liked the slow dramatic essence of it. Still, I can understand the disdain for this flick.

In any case, I don't think this story is well-known, at least not today. McCarthyism is somewhat well-known. But the effect it had on the lives of the people who lived through it has been given little documentation in movies. That's why I appreciate this effort to make this movie as accurate as possible (especially since history is my favorite subject; I majored in it).

My sig: why do almost all movies on imdb have a "worst movie ever!" thread?

I don't even understand why they keep casting the same hundred actors in all of their films. There's a huge long line of actors waiting to act, they undoubtedly are capable to, and would do for just a fraction of what these celebrities get paid.

McCarthyism is an exemplary story. Most importantly it shows how obedient the western, namely American society is. Personal isolation and individualism are key to operating this society. The western elite is very well trained in its ways. When Orwell came up with the thoughtcrime was he foreseeing the capitalist dystopia? I see how thought control have been working throughout the modern times.

Seeing new faces has a lot to do with why foreign movies and indie flicks have such a different appeal. It's like eating homecooked food after always eating at restaurants, especially chains. There are indeed many actors out there. But studios are hung up on star power, for one thing. Hollywood has always been big with the idea that a movie will sell more with a familiar face. It seems to be true, but it's no excuse for only using the same people. Interestingly enough, I have friends in other countries who complain about the same thing. Example, French friends of mine complain that they see the same people all the time too. And this is even worse in a country like France, where they produce less than a third of all movies produced in the US.

By the way, you're right how McCarthyism shows how obedient US society is. It's good to see someone else coming to these same conclusions. OP, are you an actor or historian by any chance?
