Every time Dianne Reeves sang, the movie suddenly become alive. personal, warm, emotional and deep. Everyone else 'looked interesting' and I was ready to be interested. The first five minutes, I got right into the film, the period, the cinematography and was 'ready' to be swept into it. Next thing I know the movie is over. That certain 'it' never happened. Something vital is totally missing.
I would agree that there is some emotional distance in the film. The film centers on the crew while at work at CBS and it isn't revealed much about the personal lives of Murrow, Friendly or any of the others. A few glimpses here and there, but that is about it. Not enough, perhaps, to pull the audience in emotionally.
However, while the characters may not be fully drawn out, the topics in the film concerning McCarthyism, constitutional liberties, and journalism are enough to propel the story forward. There is certainly plenty of drama, although it might be more on the intellectual level.
and it isn't revealed much about the personal lives of Murrow, Friendly or any of the others. Who cares about that stuff? It has nothing to do with the story the movie is trying to tell. The movie is well acted, but it's not meant to entertain you.

What's wrong with that? If we want melodrama, there's plenty of that on TV and in lots of bad movies.
