How did Edward survive?

I only watched parts of the film, so maybe I just missed it, but to my knowledge:

- no working blood substitute is found until the very end of the movie

- all non-working substitutes that the team works on have the side effect of killing those who use it

- Edward refuses to drink blood.

So why did he not turn into one of the batlike vampires?

reply

Edward drank animal blood to survive, though it was shown that he was slowly starting to turn into a subsider. When he crashed into Audrey's group, he got distracted when he saw that his ears were becoming deformed.

reply

Ah, thanks. So, if animal blood is an ALMOST viable substitute, why didn't the starving vampires drink that?

reply

When Frankie first appears, he says that even animal blood was getting hard to find. So the vampires were driving other species into extinction, as they were doing with humans.

reply

Thats true so it seems seems strange since billions of people kill and eat animals on a daily bases. It seems like 5 or 6 billion vampires could breed enough animals to ..not kill.. but keep alive and farm for blood.

reply

Keyword is ALMOST, although pigs blood did slow down the transformation it didn't reverse it. Bottomline is only real human blood could reverse their degeneration.

That's probably what they cut their coffee with, pigs blood mixed with a tiny bit of human blood.

reply

Remember Audrey gave him some of her blood so he could stave off the degeneration before they reached the human camp.
