For a terrific TV adaptation of Matheson's own short story "Steel" see the 1963 TV Twilight Zone episode "Steel" starring Lee Marvin at the peak of his career and Joe Mantell (Angie from "Marty" (1955).

I saw this episode when it originally aired and I've seen it a few time since then. Lee Marvin was great in it, but he had not yet reached the peak of his career.

I saw it in reruns. It was one of the best things ever done on the Twilight Zone.
