Maybe I was getting a little disinterested at this point, but what did Max mean when he said Charlie's 'secret is safe'??

On another thread people question whether he's not really the dad, due to the confusion over age (10 or 11 years old)
But when he alologises to the boy at the door of his new home he includes an apology for disappearijybwhen the baby came along, so I think there's no question (OK Jackman's mind) that he is the father
Was it the 'sale' for $100k, which he'd said was only $50k?
Not enough of a secret and also he only took $50k in the end.
Is it simply that he has actually become a loving dad?
