...about this miserable remake is that it has improved the standing of the brilliant and criminally underrated original. Although the remake has some beautiful photography (the aerial shots in and around the island, and the moody greyish shots of the foggy beach at twilight), it is a total disaster with perhaps the worst ending since Tim Burton's remake of Planet Of The Apes.
Did anybody else want to throw Selma Blair off the top of that lighthouse for her appalling acting?
"The Fog" is my favorite horror film after "Halloween", and I find the remakes of both these John Carpenter classics to be absolutely dreadful. While Rob Zombie can have some credit for trying to put his own spin on "Halloween", I still hated his remake and its sequel...mainly because of the awful characters, acting, dialogue, and the stripping of Michael Myers' mystique. At least he can say he tried to do something a little different though, however unsuccessful.
The remake for "The Fog" though is just completely lame. From the WB TV actors and the crappy CGI, to the contrived script and pedestrian direction, I think it might vie for one of the worst remakes in recent memory. As for Selma Blair, she was bad, but Maggie Grace was even worse. I don't understand how she keeps getting roles. Her character was so ridiculously stupid (as was the "twist" connecting her character to the ghosts). Her acting & personality is so grating that I wanted to beat her to death with Tom Welling's corpse.
Anyway, at least I live in the comfort knowing that the original still exists for others to discover, and will far outlive the memory of the god-awful excuse for a remake.
