It's the Road Warrior with Zombies

with a little Hitchcock's "Birds" as well as a "tribute" to the "Andromeda Strain", with the underground biological test facility in the desert with the humble shack hiding the elevator entrance

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

I thought the underground bunker and testing of zombies was a nod to Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD.

I think they're attracted by the pile of flesh, maybe? Or simply the fact it's the ONLY flesh or activity for miles?

Not sure.

I was kind of hoping to see the Alice clones as Zombies :)

No, the Umbrella facility was too high tech for Day of the Dead. That one was very crude, an old missile silo and some unfinished limestone caverns. Watch the original Andromeda Strain. That Umbrella high tech facility was remarkably similar to the AS one.
But you'd think they would have better barriers than a single piece of chain link fence you'd find anywhere.

I guess when I say "day of the dead" I meant the entire concept of being underground, a military inspiration with testing of zombies.

Obviously Umbrella would not work in such a low tech bunker as in Day of the Dead. I think the filmmakers took inspiration from it.

You don't see the similarities? One of the main plots of Day of the Dead was the testing of Zombies, trying to teach them. Even the entire dialogue about how the zombies don't "need" to feed. That's lifted right from DOTD.

Lol, Frankenstein and Bub
That is a good point. But I was talking more about the physical layout than the purpose

Yeah the bunker had a DOTD meme to it. But it also reminded me of the Andromeda Strain being in a desert with the elevator hidden in a plain old building.

Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.
