danny elfman

I was impressed by parts of the score, particularly the finale. I was surprised though that it was elfman. the ambiance was quite a bit different than his usual one his more familiar sound creates. his range continues to impress.

it definately felt like a departure to me. but a good one.
anyone else notice this?

I'm don't really have any memories of Elfman's other work, except Hellboy II, which I thought was good. I do think that the score for The Kingdom is truly inspired; quite daring, conveying great feeling; not the usual. I love what it did for the film.

It's one of his more subdued scores. He's usually filling up the speakers with a lot of bombast or cartoony music like his super hero or Tim Burton scores. I think a lot of it was inspired by director Berg's desires. If you listen to the score to Berg's earlier film, Friday Night Lights, you'll hear a lot of similarity with the ambient guitar music.
