Why was this film made?

I just watched this last night and I was wondering why a movie studio would have green lighted this film. Granted, Sharon Stone is famous now and the original film grossed over one hundred million dollars domestically, but come on. That was back in 1992. Talk about milking a cow dry. I don't know why the studios thought this would make any decent money. (Or any money at all). It was embarrassingly bad and I don't know how any of the actors kept a straight face while filming this picture.
