Deepest Cuts of All

Has anybody watched the two cut scenes on the DVD where Catherine undergoes psychoanalysis? I thought these were the two best scenes in the movie. They explained the character, made her more complex and likeable, and explained both this movie and the first one.

The director made the idiotic decision to cut the scenes in order to speed up the pace of the movie. He basically cut out the brain of the movie, so what is left is an incomprehensible mess. He lobotomized the wonderful script.

If the two scenes had been left in, the pace of the film would have been slower, but the film would have made sense and I think at least a few critics would have appreciated the film. It would have aroused a great deal of debate and been a success at the box office. Sharon Stone would have been nominated for an Academy Award, instead of a Razzie. Cutting out these two three-minute scenes was a horrible mistake.

I couldn't agree with you more! Those scenes were amazing, deep and powerfull. They were very basic instinct 1... too bad the film received such a bad director, that didn't even know the real essence of the movie.

We should not forget that while Michael Caton-Jones might have made a bad decision by cutting these scenes, ultimately, he is responsbile for making the movie as good as it is. I haven't seen Basic Instinct 1 in a while, but I felt that 2 was actually better.

I watched the film again today.
Two things came to my attention on second viewing. First the performance by David Morrissey seemed much better the second time. Sharon Stone's performance is so amazing that Morrissey's performance seemed weak by comparison. However, he is quite believable as a psychiatrist under tight self-control and really has great chemistry with Stone.
Second, it occurs to me that the film is really about how men and women perceive each other differently and especially how men perceive strong and confident women as being dangerous.

Incidentally, in looking at the films that the Golden Raspberry Society has chosen as "Worse Movie of the Year" over the last four years, "Gigly," "Catwoman", "Dirty Love" and "Basic Instinct 2" it is clear that the society is in the hands of men who hate films in which women appear confident and dominant.
