Hi,
although this documentary is an intriguing one, it offers yet another possible reality. At least I feel a need to research further, as this documentary might depict information in polarized way and even false information. If it checks out, then it is interesting news indeed.
There's a large amount of documents written with critical or alternative view points also by your countrymen in the internet along with mainstream information. Chomsky is of course one of your leading authors. Knowledge wise he should be up there with the best. One needs to have an entry point to deviate from wysiwyg mindset and Chomsky is as good place to start as any. Hardest part usually is to be willing to explore different doctrines, no matter how much they deviate from ones own.
As you imply, your mainstream media might not be so willing to broadcast views that deviate from official government policy. Freedom and speech and all of that also enables one also to remain speechless at will. Happens of course with varying degrees everywhere were certain information might be harmful for maintaining power structures. Whatever your domestic media system is throwing at your face (so to speak :-), you as an US citizen have the possibility to check alternative news and view points all around the globe. Even better you have a possibility to travel for example here in the "old countries" of Europe to get distance.
Surely we outside of USA realm have different take on many issues, but I don't see it just as some national property. In every nation some of us digest things strait up like babys. No questions, we just open your mouths and trust that whatever comes in is safe and non-harmfull for us. Then again some of us are trying to learn how to eat by ourselfs :-)
All the best on your journey...
