So it's a religion of peace, huh?

LONDON (Reuters) - Militant Islamists will continue to attack Britain until the government pulls its troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, one of the country's most outspoken Islamic clerics said on Friday.

Speaking 15 days after bombers killed over 50 people in London and a day after a series of failed attacks on the city's transport network, Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed said the British capital should expect more violence.

"What happened yesterday confirmed that as long as the cause and the root problem is still there ... we will see the same effect we saw on July 7," Bakri said.

"If the cause is still there the effect will happen again and again," he said, adding he had no information about future attacks or contacts with people planning to carry out attacks.

Bakri, a Syrian-born cleric who has been vilified in Britain since 2001 when he praised the September 11 hijackers, said he did not believe the bombings and attempted attacks on London were carried out by British Muslims.

He condemned the killing of all innocent civilians but described attacks on British and U.S. troops in Muslim countries as "pro-life" and justified.

In an interview with Reuters, Bakri described Osama bin Laden, leader of the radical Islamist network al Qaeda, as "a sincere man who fights against evil forces."

Bakri said he would like Britain to become an Islamic state but feared he would be deported before his dream was realized.

"I would like to see the Islamic flag fly, not only over number 10 Downing Street, but over the whole world," he said.

MESSAGE OF PEACE ... MESSAGE OF WAR

A hate figure for the British tabloid press, the bearded and bespectacled Bakri said Islam contained "a message of peace for those who want to live with the Muslims in peace."

"But Islam is a message of war for those who declare war against Muslims," he said.

"I condemn any killing and any bombing against any innocent people in Britain or abroad, but I expect the British people to condemn the killing of Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan."

However, asked about Islamist attacks on British and U.S. troops and on Israelis, he said: "If violence is pro-life I don't condemn it."

Britain has around 1,100 troops in Afghanistan and 8,500 in Iraq. Prime Minister Tony Blair supported the United States in its respective invasions of both countries in 2001 and 2003.

Bakri, a 46-year-old father of six, was born in Syria and lived in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. When the Saudi government expelled him in 1985 he came to London.

Nicknamed "The Tottenham Ayatollah" after the area of north London in which he lives, he has infuriated many Britons with his firebrand speeches and refusal to condemn suicide bombings.

He founded the British branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir, which describes itself as a non-violent political party dedicated to creating an Islamic caliphate centered on the Middle East.

But he split from the group in 1996 and set up al Muhajiroun, which won notoriety in 2001 for celebrating the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon which killed nearly 3,000 people.

Bakri has Syrian and Lebanese citizenship and says he thinks the British government might deport him to one of those two countries in the wake of this month's bombings.

"But I think that would be political suicide for the British government if they started to deport and imprison all extremists and radicals," he said.

"Because if, God forbid, something happened again, they would have nobody left to blame."

The self-confessed killer of Theo van Gogh faced the victim’s mother in an Amsterdam court today and told her he felt no remorse for his crime.

Turning his chair towards Anneke van Gogh as she watched from the public gallery, the Moroccan-born Mohammed Bouyeri said: “I don’t feel your pain. I don’t have any sympathy for you. I can’t feel for you because I think you’re a non-believer.”

The Islamic radical admitted killing Mr Van Gogh, a Dutch film maker, saying he was driven by his religious beliefs, and claimed he would do the same again.

Mr Bouyeri, the son of Moroccan immigrants to the Netherlands, is accused of shooting and stabbing van Gogh to death in broad daylight in the streets of Amsterdam in November, before nearly decapitating him and impaling a five-page note declaring holy war into his corpse with a knife.

Despite insisting on his right to silence when the trial opened yesterday, Mr Bouyeri spoke out publicly today for the first time about the murder which sparked a wave of ethnic and religious violence across the once-tolerant country.

Clutching a Koran, and wearing a flowing robe and a black and white chequered headscarf, Mr Bouyeri praised Allah and the prophet Mohammed before admitting the killing.

In a chilling insight into his mindset, he told the panel of judges: "I did what I did purely out of my beliefs. I want you to know that I acted out of conviction and not that I took his life because he was Dutch or because I was Moroccan and felt insulted."

Seven months before his ritualistic slaughter, van Gogh had produced a film about domestic violence in Islam, which offended many Muslims. Mr Bouyeri insisted: "If I ever get free, I would do it again."

He was caught by police in a gun battle after he fled the scene of the crime spattered in van Gogh’s blood. A note was found in his pocket saying that he wanted to become a martyr.

Speaking in Dutch with a Moroccan accent, he turned to police in the court and said: "I shot to kill and be killed. You cannot understand."

Some spectators rose to their feet, visibly stunned by his comments. The confession and lack of remorse highlight the worst fears haunting the mainstream Dutch society about the seemingly unbridgeable gap between them and some of the alienated Muslim youths growing up in the country.

Mr Bouyeri, 27, was a well-educated moderate Muslim who was considered reasonably well integrated, before becoming radicalised nearly two years ago. Prosecutors say that he had become dedicated to Holy War against the enemies of Islam and had murdered van Gogh to spread terror in the Netherlands.

They claim he is part of a network of Islamic with international links called the Hofstad Group, many of whose members are awaiting trial on terrorism charges in Rotterdam. The chief prosecutor, Frits van Straelen, told the court: "The accused preaches a message of hate and violence. He preaches that anyone who thinks differently can be killed."

The verdict is expected on July 26. Mr Bouyeri faces life imprisonment without probation

Nothing sickens me more than people like Bouyeri. Nothing sickens me more than people who take lives because they offended their *beep* religion. Believe in Islam if you want, but my attitude is that Islam, *beep* Islam is not worth one human life.

You know, sometimes being brainwashed is good. Clean your mind of all the bad stuff

Why single out Islam?

All religion is violent, more people have dies because of religion than any other man made cause.

Christianity is responsible for the deaths of billions, I don't hear you calling for that to be banned.

Ban all religion, that's what I think. I don't descriminate based upon my own prejudices.

reply

Wrong, wrong, wrong, no major religion is violent, it's only people who use religion as an excuse to be violent.

No where in any of the Islamic Christian whatever teachings, stories etc, does it say go out and kill people, they're all about good moral judgement and living your life to help other and so on, people intepret it stupidly and think it's justification for their insane killings.

Muslims are not Islam you freak, just as Americans are not the constitution.

indigo says >> All religion is violent,

This is the kind of tactic that Islam has used over and over and over to put off people taking it to task.
Well, the US and the West says, we want your cheap labor, but you are going to change or we are
going to make you change - i.e. bring you into modernity - because we must.

Wait sorry are you trying to provide some sort of evidence? Are you trying to say he represents the religious? If so then seriously go to hell you ignorant fool.

Instead of spreading hate speech by sharing this sick views of "the other side". Why not stop and try and LEARN AND EDUCATE YOURSELF. Ignore people that speak of hatred and brush them to the side and never do them the favour and spread it. Instead you want to ignite hatred and anger to cause more problems?

This is the whole problem with this whole *beep* People like Irish-Sunglasses that think one sided are probably the same type of susceptible people that end up strapping bombs to their body. Only the difference is his wimpy attempt of coming online and spreading this *beep* because he's too pussy to do anything else.

The fact is; American people shouldn't be punished for the actions or words of some other Americans, but if only the west was not hypocritical in their own actions. They do what exactly the terrorists do. Fight violence with violence then justify the violence with the actions of the other side.

Just as bad as who they believe they're at war with. Pigs fighting pigs. Objecting and distancing yourself from these people is the key to a solution.

I wouldn't call ignoring lies and fabricated Intel, and ignoring the fact that they are lies and fabricated Intel (and in some cases, demanding lies fabricated Intel from the CIA), to push for unnecessary wars "the religion of peace" either. The documentary never mentions the religion of most Neocons - but it's no secret to any American with half a brain.

Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle all deserve trials as war criminals. And groups like PNAC and the other Kristol-backed organizations should be cast out as fascist organizations and declared illegal to operate in the U.S. You want to bring down American Presidents who refuse to be controlled by the Neocon mindset (Bill Clinton and Barack Obama?) Move to Israel.
