WOW..10 YEARS OLD. ALWAYS LIKE DIT BUT...

..the only issue I had with the plot was the story line involving Sonny and Isabella (Gong Li, Montoya's 2nd). A supposed professional undercover officer (Sonny, Colin Farrell) is willing to not only blow his cover BUT risk the lives of his fellow officers just for the sake of some booty?!? In fact it DID lead indirectly to Trudy's kidnapping as it raised Yero's suspicion of Sonny and his team. I know it's made out that Sonny LOVES her but the initial attraction is lust NOT love. I didn't buy it. Not only that but those scenes slowed the story down ex: being the time in in Cuba dancing etc..who cares?!? I understand this isn't an 80's Schwarzenegger action film and it is necessary to appeal to the female going audience..however i think 97%% of female audience members would agree they don't NEED those scenes in every film. Michael Mann didn't incorporate one in Collateral and it was a near perfect film (IMO). I like the fact Mann uses strong female characters but having them fall for the bad boy or male lead every time somewhat diminishes that strength. Keeping Isabella as a "Black Widow/ femme fatale would have (again IMO) ADDED to her charterers strength and impact. Aside from that the acting, cinematography, editing, score, sound, directing, etc..were outstanding.

One of the recurring themes in the television show was the fact that many members of the Vice squad fell for "bad guys". I think the only ones that didn't were Zito and Switek. Here are a few episodes I can think of, off hand:

The Dutch Oven
When Irish Eyes Are Crying
Calderone's Return, Part II (daughter of the bad guy)
French Twist
Theresa

I thought it was fitting to have this as part of the plot of the feature film.

Art as expression, not as market campaigns, will still capture our imaginations

I think the initial attraction WAS lust - but more than that, a business proposition to be made. And the best way to get close and make that proposition was: a seduction. Love only becomes part of the relationship later, I believe.

I agree, initially Sonny was trying to go over Yero's head to get closer to Montoya, because Yero obviously hated Sonny from the get-go. And then he fell for her. Rico is constantly questioning his actions...when they leave to go to Cuba, after Sonny gets back from Cuba(after being MIA for a couple days,) and before the final shootout. One of my favorite parts of the film is how deep Sonny goes, and that made the scene where he cuts her loose and says his goodbyes all the more heartbreaking...as if he was on the edge of tears, but knew the "right" thing to do by his partner and teammates. The part where Rico asks Sonny is he is ready for everything to collapse into on frame, and Sonny replies that no he is not, you can see the stress of the situation and the sense of dread, and at that point I really didn't know WTF he was going to do.
