"Miami Vice" vs "Blackhat"

Which is your favourite between these two films?
Critics often said that "Blackhat" was close to "Miami Vice" in its thematics and visuals, like a kind of remake.
Do you prefere "Miami Vice"'s gunfights or "Blackhat"s shootouts?
Colin Farrell and Gong Li's performances or Chris Hemsworth and Wei Tang's characters?
Both films flopped badly in theaters and met "love it or hate it" reviews, but now "Miam Vice" has a kind of cult status so i guess "Blackhat"s fate will not be very different in months and years to come...

Miami Vice is a modern masterpiece so I have to give it the nod. As someone who loves MV, I was surprised by how different Blackhat felt. On paper, they have a lot of the same things, but somehow this film just felt very very different and I think even a lot of people who adore MV may not like Blackhat.

I much preferred the shootouts in Blackhat. The second one might be my favorite of Mann's career.

I also liked Hemsworth/Wei Tang over Farrell/Gong Li. Similar non-American white guys doing American accents with hard to understand Asian women, but I thought both were better in Blackhat.

Somehow I don't think Blackhat will receive the cult adoration of Miami Vice over time. I think it will forever be met with groans by the masses when mentioned. I really think the films are very different, but I imagine like Miami Vice, Blackhat will have a lot of re-watch value for me.

Sorry, I would have to take Blackhat over Miami Vice. Blackhat is not that good but liked it better than Mann's Miami Vice. I haven't watched Miami Vice in a while but from what I remember I was very disappointed in it. One of the main virtues of the TV series was the bright, pastel colors but Mann's vision of it was dark and uninteresting. I thought Colin Farrell and especially Jamie Foxx were miscast. And as I mentioned Blackhat was OK, but not that great. A lot of people criticized the choice of Hemsworth - but that wasn't the problem. The problem is the script and the plot. And Mann's visual choices are questionable again - he manages to take exotic locations like Hong Kong and Jakarta and make them dull. But still, I prefer Blackhat to Miami Vice. As for Mann's best work I would pick Manhunter as his best film (I may be in the minority but to each his own). After Manhunter I liked Collateral and Thief.

'Heat' is his most complete film. To me it's just complete on every level. The script, acting, shootouts, realism, cinematography... It doesn't miss. 'Manhunter' is a close second but Visually it's his best, no doubt about it.

I agree, i really like Gong Li in "Miami Vice" but i tend to prefer Wei Tang/Hemsworth, also the gunfights and soundtrack are better in "Blackhat".

Blackhat is definitly a sequel to Vice, production wise. I cant view MV objectively. I love the series and its too insulting.

I like BH a bit more than MV.
For some reason when I first saw MV when it first released on dvd, I really didn't like it that much. But after recently buying the director's cut on Blu-ray, I freaking love it.
MV is just another reason why Michael Mann is the master of shoot out scenes.

My favourite is Miami Vice, I love MV; to me its an awesome movie. I like BlackHat too but he has a bit lack for the music, the characters are not good enough and the ending is so so I think, still a great movie.

Miami Vice was better in almost all counts. Blackhat was good but MV is next level.

Vice, easily. Blackhat had a number of good moments but it was also filled with a lot of blah and a number of genuine groan-inducing moments. Any time they'd cut to the electrical current traveling along circuit boards and cabling, I had to resist the urge to stop watching the film. It was indicative of a number of poor decisions throughout the movie.

Between Blackhat and Public Enemies, Mann is on a definite downcurve to me.

"Miami Vice" is too flawed to be called "a masterpiece", but it's an interesting and raw blockbuster film.

It has good scenes, visuals & moods, but the casting is wrong in some parts and the storytelling lacks.

The casting of Gong Li, while interesting in theory, didn't work out, because she obviously doesn't understand what she's saying sometimes. The same problem again with the Chinese chick in "Blackhat".

"MV" is a better film, at least in the superior Director's Extended Cut.

It still has flaws, but not a stupid scene like "Blackhat", where cops drive in front of a gang firing automatic weapons...probably the most ridiculous scene Mann has ever written and directed.

And I say that as a fan.

"Miami Vice": 7/10

"Blackhat" 6/10

"Public Enemies" 7/10

"Heat" 10/10

"The Insider" 10/10
