Four brothers was heavily influenced by blaxploitation movies the score,if you have seen any blaxploitation movies is an obvious tribute. I would have hated the score to if i didn't understand the reference.

Singleton has to go full out then... it's like he dips in toes in that genre but then doesn't do anything visually to back it up where it'd make sense. Tarrintino does it to the opposite extreme.

The movie is basically a remake of The John Wayne flick "The Sons of Katie Elder." It's a western movie set in modern times... Don't get what else he could have done to make that more clear?!?

Well, this IS a John Singleton movie. I recall Shaft had a similar soundtrack, which seemed more appropriate for that movie because it was set in the 70's era of groovy urban jazz. The use of it in Four Brothers doesn't really fit the mood well and seems forced.

OP is whacked on this one--of COURSE it's a "tribute" to the Blaxploitation genre, but...considering the plot and tone of the movie (not to mention it's filmed exclusively in and around urban Detroit), it's VERY appropriate that they picked some of the darker Motown records to provide mood and stylized subtext.

((I know, I know--it's actually filmed in Canada, but they were attempting to evoke Detroit, and one of their ways of doing that was with an appropriate musical pastiche of fine, vintage R&B.))

I disagree. The music fits the film very precisely. It gave it an urban feel, which was perfect. The Motown music exemplifies that era and that area of the city. This music was a pleasant surprise. There were only a handful of missteps. Barely worth a mention, in my opinion.

Are you talking about the Motown song choices or the orchestral score?
