Sad...
Was there any point in the movie that you found yourself crying? For me, it was when the mother penguin tryed to steal another mother penguins baby because she lost her own. It was so heartbreaking.

shareI got teary then too. And when the egg broke. But mostly when the mother penguins come back and the babies see them. Of course, I was not watching the movie alone, so I had to pretend that I wasn't getting at all teary.
In the end, the Shadow was a small and passing thing...
After the storm, when there are dozens of the little ones (and the older ones) lying around, frozen to death. Being a huge animal lover, I burst into tears during that scene, but found my eyes all watery in a few other scenes as well.
This movie is as sad as it is happy and uplifting.
P.S. Everyone please ignore horsegirl_laclair.
I am big! It's the pictures that got small.

i got misty, but never cried cried. i think it had its very sad parts (especially when the mother looks like she is trying to wake her dead chick), but i think since its nature, and things almost HAVE to happen like that (seals and birds need to eat too), i didnt find myself in tears

I almost cried on the part where the egg broke. The only reason I didn't cry was because my 2 yr old was sitting next to me making a comment about every 10 seconds.
Mommy, its a penguin.
Mommy, its the moon
Mommy, its snowing.
Cute at first, but annoying after the umpteenth time!
Yay! I'm a llama again....Oh, wait.
When that penguin was all alone walking back, but he was too far behind. The narrator was like "he has little chance of survival" and then the poor thing slips and falls over...I burst into tears every time.
shareLOL haha for me too that part is so sad...

"When that penguin was all alone walking back, but he was too far behind. The narrator was like "he has little chance of survival" and then the poor thing slips and falls over...I burst into tears every time"
why he or she is the only one who noticed that?
The saddest parts for me were:
When the mother found the dead baby penguin, she just seemed so upset.
When that bird was after the baby penguins, I kept saying "Why won't the film crew help her!!!!"
When all the male penguins were huddled together with ice and snow on them.
But it was an awesome documentary.

This was very cruel in some way... lone pingu in that huge landscape.
It's classified. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.
-Yea its sad when the mother loses her chick.
-I also agree with the posters who felt sorry for the penguins who left to late for the amrch, especially when it slipped, was very sad.
-Also when the storm came, and there was chaos when they were looking for their eggs that rolled about.
-Also when the Seal(?) Eats the penguin. Narrator says "the Predetor has taken 2 lives, the mother and the unborn chick who will never be fed" (or along those lines) that was really cruel. At the same time, you cant blame the predetor, its the circle of life
-Cruel for the Newborns AND the parents.
I agree with all the people mentioned above about the sad parts (I thought the part where the lonely penguin slipped was very funny at first, but when I heard it was solitary, I thought it was the saddest thing in the world), but I cried cried when the mother was first trying to wake up her frozen baby and then tried to steal the other baby.
I thought the documentary was very good, but I wouldn't want to watch it again. It broke my heart when those babies were trying to run away from the bird and they kept geting caught until the bird finally got one and killed it. I know that's nature and the circle of life, but still...:-(
This is the second movie I cried at. The other was Million Dollar Baby. I cried at the exact same spot.
shareI think many things were to cry over. Such as seing that lone penguin walk over Antarctica, and the egg breaking, also when that damn Skua was trying to get penguins.
shareThere were lots of moments that were very upsetting to me.
The bit where the penguin was left alone and when Morgan Freeman said they have little chance of survival. :(
The part when the group had to cuddle up together to keep warm, and one ended up being too exhausted and was laying on the ice. And Freeman said "He'll just drift off to sleep and dissapear" and he kept blinking and then his eyes completey closed. I found that really upsetting aswell, the way its edited and narrated is very effective.
Also when the eggs froze and they couldn't swap it from mother to father...
The next was with the Seal, at last the penguin made it into the water but the seal stopped it from going back to feed its baby who would starve along with the father who would be waiting and then needing to leave behind his chick. :( And how all that work and walking was in vain.. And to the person who said you can't blame the seal for taking the penguin, the seal could have just eaten fish! But yeah I understand that its the circle of life and animals(same as humans) want a more 'filling' meal, they will eat meat. I wish nature wasn't so cruel though..
The part when the poor chick froze to death in the storm and the mother was so upset(sounded like she was crying and wishing for her chick to wake because she was touching it with her beak) is probably the saddest part in the film, one of the saddest things I've ever seen. And she was in such agony that she tried to take another penguin's chick. Animals have strong feelings and emotions. It's sad that they have to go through all that, and gain such a bond only to have it all taken away from you in a second. Life is unfair and cruel so often. Also when they were showing past clips of the chick with the mother during that scene it just added to the emotion of that moment. Was really really sad. :'( When my sister noticed that she was laughing!!! I was saying she's heartless, she didn't even think the chicks were that cute!!! Grrrr. She's just not as emotional or caring about animals as I am then I guess. But to laugh during a scene like that?? I kept trying to hold my tears in that bit, if I was alone I would've cried my eyes out probably. That bit gets to me everytime, but then so do all the sad moments in it. :'(
The last one I can remember at the mo was when the bird predator came down (Skua) and tried to get one of the poor wittle chickies and they were running away trying to get away. That was heartbreaking to watch... :( To the person that said why didn't the crew help them. Well I'll tell ya, its because they needed it for their shot, they wanted to show exactly everything that could happen to them in their lives. But still, they could have easily done something to get rid of the bird, they didn't need to have it kill one of the chicks there but merely stated that they did/could. They just wanted the shot. Humans are the worst animal really, many are so heartless! We're the most destructive force on the planet yet aparently supposed to be the most intelligent, if we're so great why do we cause most of the world's suffering? ..Ok gone a bit far there but still, I agree they should have helped the poor chickies! All the crew had to do really was take one step over to the chicks, it would have scared away the bird most likely. The penguins didn't seem to be trying very hard to help them too! :/
So many parts in this film made me cry, every time I saw it I really have to try hard to hold the tears!
Having said all that though, there were moments in it that made me laugh and smile aswell.
But the film is very good, I didn't know penguins had to go through all that. Educational and an emotionaly beautiful film. It was done very well, the camera work, music, narrating, etc.. It's made me love penguins even more!
God I wish I hadn't come onto this thread now, its made me feel really sad! :-(
Rare is it that I get emotional during a movie, but gosh was this movie sad. I know it had its happy moments but after a while I had to stop watching because I just couldn't bare to watch any more.
I understand that this is nature like it or not but I hate how cruel it can be. These penguins are so defenseless at times. Those poor lonely penguins who cant keep up the pack and just eventually die. Seal and bird attacks. The little chicks who cant survive the cold or need to be left behind due to lack of food. I realize human intervention is not always a good idea but for crying out loud is there something we can do. Maybe somehow create a snow cave and try to convince the penguins to go in it to protect them from the winter storms. Picking up stragglers who cant keep up with group. Bring some form of nourishment to the penguins so they don't have to walk all the way out to get it. Maybe those ideas are too drastic and would destroy the balance of life that is set out over there but geez just to help some would be nice.
Kinda makes me appreciate life a little more considering how I don't have to endure some of those hardships.
"Maybe somehow create a snow cave and try to convince the penguins to go in it to protect them from the winter storms"
How does one convince a penguin?
I felt exactly like you did, teary eyed exactly at the same places (I'm a bit too hypersensitive and emotional), except maybe when the Skua was trying to get a chick. I was very sad about this, but suppose that they would have scared it off, it would have come back later on, or there would have been another bird that did it, nature is like that. I guess they really wanted to show us what they go through and exactly how they live. Sometimes I find nature very cruel, but then I think it's not really cruel, it's just the way nature is.
I love nature so much; I'm constantly watching documentaries on National Geographic, the Discovery channel and Animal Planet. But nature can be really hard to watch sometimes, this is a fact and it gets me teary eyed often.
Today is December 10 2007, 12:30 AM and in Montreal, Quebec, Canada the temperature is actually -15°C (5°F). During the movie at one point I was so cold watching this Antarctic landscape that I had to go and put on my polar. I guess I was sympathizing with those poor penguins and all they have to endure to bring life to this world.
